Rugby union: Drama and glory at Twickenham for Trent College lads

THERE was Twickenham glory for the teenagers from Trent College as they lifted the NatWest Schools Under-18 Vase in dramatic style.

The Long Eaton-based students celebrated a nail-biting 17-16 victory in Saturday’s final against Exeter College.

Having trailed 8-0 after half an hour, Trent hit back with tries from lock James Benstead, centre Ashley Britton and skipper Ben Trembling, plus a conversion from Gabriel Calland.

They led 17-11 going into added time and though Exeter scored a last-gasp try, the conversion – the last kick of the game – was unsuccessful.

“We’ve known all season we’ve got character in abundance and we showed it again,” said Trembling.

“It’s been easy leading these boys – they are phenomenal. This is all down to the 22 boys in the squad and the coaching staff.”

Britton added: “I felt ecstatic scoring at Twickenham. I’ve never had that feeling before.”

The team were cheered on by a 300-strong travelling support at Twickenham and head of rugby Guy Hope is hoping the success will inspire everyone at the school.

“The buzz around the school in the lead up to the final was fantastic and you could see that with the support we had at Twickenham,” he said.

“The supporters have been absolutely outstanding and a massive thank you on behalf of the team to everyone who travelled down to help us.”

Benstead said: “It’s an exciting time to be involved in rugby at Trent.”
