CORNWALL will host this year’s South West Premier Rugby League curtain raiser, the South West 9s tournament, on Sunday May 4.
Redruth’s Recreation Ground has been chosen as the host venue and the day will also honour rugby league legend Steve Prescott MBE, and all proceeds from the day will be donated back to his Foundation, which supports many initiatives across the country since his tragic passing last year.
The Keltek-sponsored Cornish Rebels will compete against teams from all over Devon and Cornwall including South West Premier Champions Devon Sharks, Exeter University, Plymouth Titans and The Rats, a team comprising of members from Illogan Park RFC’s title winning team who will be playing Rugby League for the first time.
Legend
Former international rugby league stars will be in attendance including former Great Britain captain and St Helens’ legend Paul Sculthorpe and former Warrington Wolves’ scrum-half Lee Briers.
Newly retired Premier League referee Mark Halsey will also be there, and together they will hold a talk and open QA forum in the evening, along with a charity auction for signed rugby league memorabilia.
There will also be a raffle after the tournament following the presentation of the Steve Prescott Cup to the winning team.
The day following the event will see Rebels’ Director of Development Laurence Belt and forward Alec Plunkett take part in a Lands End to John O’Groats walk, along with the Steve Prescott Foundation and Rebels charity partners State of Mind.
