As if the sight of 18-stone rugby players crashing into each other at full pelt isn’t scary enough, England’s up-and-coming stars have taken things a step further by morphing into monster alter-egos. Â
Ahead of the Marriott London Sevens tournament at Twickenham on 10-11 May – dubbed a monster weekend of rugby – some of the Red Rose players have revealed what unleashes their inner beasts.Â
To illustrate the point, several of them were given a stunning makeover, resulting in a hairy pink monster, a blue monster featuring a giant cranium and a golden monster with three eyes.

Hair scare bunch: Centre Tom Mitchell and his pink monster alter ego pose in the gym
In a series of lighthearted videos, Tom Mitchell, the 24-year-old centre, and Marcus Watson, the 22-year-old fly-half revealed that occasions such as holding the door open for someone who doesn’t say thank you are among the everyday bugbears which turn them into monsters.
The players also reveal which famous monsters reflect their Sevens team-mates, one of whom is compared to an unfortunate combination of Shrek and his best friend Donkey. Â

I’m blue: Outside back Mat Turner’s monster also boasts an over-sized cranium
Chris Cracknell, Jeff Williams, Mat Turner and Phil Burgess also take on a seven-ball challenge at Twickenham, where each man is tasked with catching seven balls in a row, while keeping each ball off the ground after it is caught. As the video proves, it is not as easy as it sounds.
The players also discuss what features of theirs are so beastly that they could be used to create a monster. Suggestions include one man’s excessive body hair, another’s giant hands and one player’s particularly large posterior.
Thankfully for everyone concerned, that particular monster was not created by the make-up artists…Â
