FERVENT forward Guy Mychajluk has vowed to curb his enthusiasm in Scunthorpe Rugby Union Club’s next couple of games â in a bid to avoid some nervy final moments.
When it comes to Scunthorpe’s penalty count, the passionate prop admits he is a serial offender, but he is determined to ensure he helps his side over the line when it comes to the next couple of Saturdays, which see home games against fellow strugglers Sandbach and Syston.
“The last 10 minutes is a crucial time not to give penalties away and I’m one of the worst for that,” said the 24-year-old steelworker
“I’ve had a few yellow cards this year â I’m probably one of the top in the league. Referees don’t seem to like me.
“If we win a game, it’s usually between either three or seven points. We’ve only had one game where it’s been more than 10.
“All it takes is for you to give a penalty away in the last two seconds and that is that win over.
“Against Nuneaton we must have given them three or four penalties in the last three minutes. Luckily their kicker had an off day.”
Despite being in the relegation zone in National Three Midlands, only two sides in the bottom half of the table have conceded fewer points than the Greens.
Defensively, Scunthorpe have been much more sound in 2013/14, a situation which Mychajluk says will serve them in good stead as they prepare for matches against strugglers with contrasting styles of play.
Sandbach, who visit on Saturday, favour a more expansive game. Second-bottom Syston will provide the Greens prop with the sort of battle he relishes.
“As a pack we’ve done really well this year â 10 times better than last season,” he added.
“The key thing for me has been missing Probey (Matt Probert, who was injured after being attacked while on a night out prior to the start of the season). Everyone has wanted to make sure we do the job for him.
“There haven’t been many packs that have beaten us or pushed us back as far.
“Defensively we’ve been good too. We’ve made sure teams have had to work for any points against us.”
