AN EAST Yorkshire college is celebrating making the approved list of sites suitable for next year’s Rugby World Cup.

Bishop Burton College passed an assessment visit from the organising committee of the rugby union competition to be used as a team base.

The college has moved into the next phase of the team base selection programme by being one of 65 venues on the approved list of bases after more than 80 venues in England and Wales applied.

Bishop Burton is not yet guaranteed to host a team, with a decision on the 50 bases being used during the tournament being confirmed later this year.

Director of sport James Earl, who led the bid for the college, said: “The team here are all pleased the standard of the college’s facilities has been recognised in this way.

“To make the approved list of team base venues is an honour in itself and we are all very excited to enter the next phase, where we will host visits from union representatives and team managers and coaches as they conduct site visits to the UK.

“Securing a nation to come to Bishop Burton would be very exciting and, whoever it might be, our role would be to make it a home-from-home training facility, providing the best possible environment for the players and team management to prepare for the tournament.”

A team base must include an indoor and outdoor training facility, a gym, an indoor swimming pool and a hotel.

These facilities must meet international team training standards and be located in close proximity of one another.

Match venue location has also been taken into account.

College principal, Jeanette Dawson, said: “England Rugby 2015′s goal for the tournament is to identify the best possible facilities and organisations to help promote Rugby World Cup 2015 and the game throughout England and beyond.

“I am proud Bishop Burton College is being considered to help showcase the best facilities on offer in England, as part of the host nation’s contribution to the tournament.”

Twenty participating teams and 500,000 overseas fans are expected to land in September next year for the tournament.

Debbie Jevans, England Rugby 2015 chief executive, said: “We are fortunate to have such a great number of excellent facilities available to host the teams in 2015 and we are pleased to have a good range, including rugby clubs, colleges, universities schools and training centres, on the approved list.

“Rugby is at the heart of all our planning and it is vital that, in our role as the organising committee, we do all we can to ensure we get the conditions absolutely right for the players to prepare for the game’s premier event.

“We will continue to work with the team managers and look forward to confirming the final list of team bases by the middle of this year.”
