Rebel Henderson announces retirement

Melbourne Rebels prop Nic Henderson will retire from professional rugby at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old made the announcement on Friday in the lead up to the Rebels match against his former club, the ACT Brumbies.

Henderson debuted with the Brumbies in 2004, where he played every game until he left at the end of 2008.

He then had a brief stint with the Western Force before moving to the Rebels in the club’s first year.

Henderson paid tribute to his family and team-mates who have supported him through his career.

“Jodie, my wife, has been a huge supporter of my career and my best friend. Without her, I know I would not have succeeded as a rugby player,” he said.

“From my times at the Force and the Brumbies I have many wonderful memories and friendships which I will have until the day I die, especially from 2004 here in Canberra when we won the Super Rugby final.

“As for the Rebels, as a group of players I have not seen a tighter bunch. I put that down to the roller coaster ride of being a new club.

Henderson is set to play his 118th Super Rugby match, the second highest of any prop forward in Australian Rugby history, behind NSW Waratah Alistair Baxter (121).

His career began in Melbourne in 1999, where he was part of the Melbourne Storm training group before converting to rugby union.

He played three Tests for his country and formed part of many Wallabies squads over his 11-year career.

Henderson has been one of the Rebels’ most influential players both and off the field, playing an active role in Victorian Rugby and as an ambassador for numerous charities.

Rebels coach Damien Hill described Henderson as a crucial member of the club’s history.

“Nic has been an integral part of this club from the outset,” said Hill.

“Hendo was recruited as much for his contribution off the field as he was for his playing ability and will leave a strong legacy with this young playing group.

“He has been instrumental within the team dynamics and culture at the Rebels, which is a legacy he will leave for many future Rebels to build on.”

Both the Brumbies and Rebels will recognise Henderson’s contribution to Australian Rugby with a presentation after their round 17 clash.

Henderson will play his last match at AAMI Park on July 12, when the Rebels face the Highlanders.
