Leicester Tigers boss Richard Cockerill in blast at critics

For most of the rest these would actually be mighty achievements. But not Leicester, who have rarely faltered since league rugby was introduced in England in 1987, let alone in the Premiership’s 17 seasons. For a dozen years Cockerill, 43, was part of it as player.

As coach – just like an oval-ball Louis van Gaal – he is the bull’s eye in the target, aimed at by Back and Moody.

“I understand their frustrations over their old team,” said Cockerill. “But until you are in the job and doing it, you don’t really understand it.

“Neither of them has done the job at this level, seen what the pressures are and how to deal with them.

“We didn’t make a final: that’s life sometimes. I can remember those two being in grand finals and Leicester losing.

“When you are an ex-player who doesn’t coach and just talks in the media, it’s easy to make assumptions.

“This is my responsibility, comes with the territory and I’m comfortable with it.”

Cockerill has been head coach or rugby director at Leicester for five years and one of the club’s coaches for the entire period of their annual final appearances.
