Tewkesbury School celebrates new rugby kit

TEWKESBURY School’s girls rugby team have raised over £750 for new kit.

Enterprising teenagers Jo Brame and Becka Woodward were behind the campaign and their efforts were all the more remarkable because they were entirely selfless – the two Tewkesbury players are leaving the school at the end of term and will not get a chance to wear the kit themselves.

But after working so hard to both establish the side and to coach them, Woodward knew the ladies kit would be vital for the side and their continued development.

The ladies completed a 7 mile fun run around Tewkesbury in fancy dress and have secured sponsorship from local businesses Mary P’s Nursery School, LL and Firmfix.

Though they have raised more money than they needed, the side are now raffling two signed Gloucester Rugby balls donated by Creed Food Service. Woodward, 16, said: “We had to wear old boys kit for one of our first games against Nunnery Wood and it wasn’t very nice to wear.

“It didn’t fit and it was quite hot. So I decided, along with my friend Jo Brame, to raise money to buy our own kit.

“Scorpion Sport made the kit for us and with the extra money raised we are hoping to get the school badge embroidered on it.

“We are very proud of what we achieved. The packages arrived last week and when we put them on we knew it was all worth the effort.”

The county and regional rugby player’s father Mervyn, who coaches the second ladies side at Cheltenham Tigers and supports the junior sections at Tewkesbury Rugby Club, was very proud of what his daughter had achieved.

Woodward was grateful for all the support received from friends, family and her teachers.

She continued: “My dad think it’s amazing what we’ve done.

“He knows I am not one to give up. We’ve had so much backing from our families – it’s been great.

“And some of the teachers have also sponsored us and they are all talking about it, so a big thanks to them.”

Though Woodward is Hartpury bound, and Brame headed into the Army, both will continue to coach the girls at Tewkesbury.

And Woodward is now hoping the professional outfits will make the girls push on and develop.

She said: “We now need to build and push on.

“The girls did some tag rugby league tournaments last year, and finished second and fourth.

“Next season we will organise some matches and travel to get some game time too.”
