BRISTOL recorded the highest-ever victory in the British Irish Cup by beating Aberavon Wizards 78-0 at Port Talbot.

Bristol’s 12 tries came from Mitch Eadie (3), Auguy Slowik, Nick Koster, Ruki Tipuna, Luke Eves, Mark Cooke, Stephen Uren, George Watkins, Charlie Amesbury and Andy Short.

The original match had been called off in October after 68 minutes, with Bristol leading 24-20, when a hole 4ft deep was discovered in the pitch, near the halfway line, but this match was completely different with the visitors gaining a huge victory.

It didn’t take long for Bristol to record their first score. After great play along the backline, it was Auguy Slowik who touched down after three minutes to make it 5-0. Fly-half Nicky Robinson added the conversion.

Slowik had scored his debut try for the club in the original match, but this was wiped out as the game was not completed.

Bristol continued to dominate and their pressure paid off when a break from Eves set up flanker Koster to score under the posts. Robinson again added the extras to make it 14-0.

With the visitors putting some good phases together, it was Eadie who got on the scoresheet next with the first of his three tries. The No 8 picked the ball up from the base of a scrum and dashed across the whitewash to score. Robinson kicked the conversion to make it 21-0.

A great drive from the restart gave captain Ruki Tipuna the opportunity to beat a few Aberavon players on his way to scoring Bristol’s fourth try. Robinson was again successful with the conversion.

Slowik was troubling Aberavon with his pace and it was the young full-back who set up Eves to go darting down the left and touch down. Robinson maintained his 100 per cent record from conversions to make it 35-0.

Bristol continued to dominate, although it was the Welsh outfit who nearly scored with a cross-kick to the left side of the field. But Slowik put his body on the line to block the receiving Aberavon winger from crossing for a score.

Late in the first half, Cardiff Metropolitan University student Mark Cooke was inches away from dabbing down Robinson’s grubber kick, but Aberavon defended manfully to hold out until the break.

Shortly after the restart, Eadie sprinted under the posts for his second try, and Robinson successfully kicked the conversion.

The back-row forward then completed his hat-trick as Bristol continued to run riot. Robinson kicked his seventh conversion.

After replacement Andrew Clatworthy was sin-binned for persistent infringement, Cooke scored his first try for the club. The inside centre showed a great side-step to dive over the line.

Replacement Steve Uren also followed in Cooke’s footsteps and crossed for his first competitive try in Bristol colours.

George Watkins was next to add his name to the scoresheet, outpacing his opposite number to touch down in the corner. The winger showed some scorching pace to dart down the right-hand touchline and score.

Charlie Amesbury showed lightning speed to race over for a further score on the hour mark.

Bristol’s final try came when replacement Andy Short went over in the last minute.
