EAST YORKSHIRE: An author from the region has written a children’s book about rugby league. David Walker, who is a lifelong follower of the sport, recognised there were few books on the subject for children.

Rampant Rugby League also answers the questions he asked as a young boy, such as why there are two types of rugby.

He said: “Along with a history of the game, both nationally and internationally, and cartoons to illustrate this, the easy-to-read book also has a number of funny, but true, stories, such as why a French man wore a false wig and beard during a game in 1934.

“With the Rugby League World Cup, there will be lots of youngsters who want to learn more about the game, the players and all the clubs around the country and the book does this perfectly.”

The book explains the game’s roots in a 1895 schism between northern and southern rugby clubs.

It takes children through the historical, geographical and sometimes bizarre development of the game.

The book is aimed at children aged eight and above.

It costs £5.99 and is published by League Publications Limited. Visit TotalRL.com or Amazon.co.uk to purchase the book.
